Choreography of the Image: Inserts (Substitutes) 2016

After the display ‘Choreography of the image’ at the Archive Gallery of Tate Britain between May 2015- April 2016, a second stage of the ‘inserts’ developed. At the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein the titles of the Inserts, Image, Light, Book, Nature, Studio, Film I, Film II, Imagination, Magic and Play, are retained, while the contents have been completely replaced, substituted. Compiled from my collection of photographs titled the Travelogue.

‘Filmic Sketches’ 2015, combines footage taken at the locations of Barbara Hepworth’s former studio the ‘Palais de danse’ in St Ives, the Cornish coastline, and a studio / living space – in this instance my own. Conceived of as a series of thinking sketches or experiments the film work considers the staging of the sculptural object before the camera as an extension of the eye.

Filmic Sketches is a 10-minute, telecined 16mm film with sound composed by Carlo Peters.

Choreography of the Image was first a display for Tate Britain’s Archive Gallery from May 2015–April 2016. Slotted into the permanent, wall-mounted vitrines of the Archive Gallery were ten bespoke wooden structures covered with various materials, which I titled Inserts. This is where I curated material into different image constellations. A selection of approximately 160 documents were in the display. This archival material included photographs, facsimiles, books, scripts, and letters from the papers of Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, which are held in the Tate Archives. Additional material was lent by Sophie Bowness and Tuula and Silvie Nicholson, including work by Hepworth and Nicholson’s son, the artist Simon Nicholson. Filmic Sketches is a 10-minute, 16mm film made during this period research that reflects upon the image constellations of the inserts.
